goal digging with sam rullo
FEB 13 2018 - Meet Sam. Sam Rullo is the Senior Operations Editor of Elite Daily. Previously, she spent three years working as a TV Editor at Bustle, and though it’s a very different job, she counts herself lucky to have found two roles that she absolutely loves, both at the same company alongside people she highly respects and enjoys working with. Sam spends most of her day working with other editors on story ideas and general strategy across all of the website's sections, and helps to plan some exciting company events in between. When she’s not working, Sam tends to watch way too much TV (hence, her previous job), spends time with friends, works out, reads murder books, and cooks whatever recipes have recently caught her eye.
why do you do what you do?
I've always loved writing and am obsessed with pop culture, and after taking some journalism classes in college, I realized I could actually make a career out of combining the two. Once I found Bustle during my senior year at NYU, I quickly realized that what I really love about both writing and pop culture is being involved in conversations about the things that affect our lives everyday — especially things that affect young women like myself. Now, I'm lucky enough to say that I do what I do because I absolutely love it, and get to help shape those important conversations.
what is one thing you hope never changes?
I hope that I never lose my passion — for what I do everyday, for living in New York, and for defending the Kardashians.
when do you feel most alive?
I know this sounds weird, but it’s when I'm in a really high-pressure and time-sensitive situation. Whether it's covering breaking news, making an important game-time decision, or just needing to make something happen immediately, I thrive off the urgency. As anyone who's met me knows, I talk ridiculously fast, and I think that translates into me liking to think and move fast too. Give me too much time with something and, like many people, l pick it apart and second guess myself constantly— but when I'm down to the wire, I'm forced to trust my gut, and just go.
what are you really good at, but kind of embarrassed that you're so good at it?
Honestly, I get embarrassed at the thought of being good at anything, and I'm sure a lot of other women would relate! I never know how to react to praise and usually end up just sort of shrinking into myself. Hopefully, I can start to embrace my inner Kanye and own it.
what is the hardest lesson you've had to learn?
That I absolutely will mess up or fail sometimes, and when I do, it's not the end of the world. I tend to put a ton of pressure on myself, so even the smallest misstep feels like a catastrophe. Like anyone else, I still get disappointed in myself, but I've learned that the sooner you pick yourself back up, the sooner you can learn from a failure and move forward. Sometimes, that can actually lead to something totally unexpected in the best way.
