the name 'til six': explained
JUL 25 2018 - WTF does Til Six mean, you ask? We're spilling the beans.
a note from Kayci:
My sophomore year of college, I was taking my first history course when I found myself woefully overwhelmed with the sheer volume of reading I was being assigned. Though I loved the spirited debates I'd have with my peers when discussing the readings in class, I found the readings themselves to be dry and dense and entirely too long; they felt impossible to get through without an IV drip of espresso and constant pep talks from my roommate.
One day I lingered after class and asked my professor if I was the only one drowning in the reading. She chuckled and replied, "Kayci, are you reading ALL of it? Don't do that - just read til five." She explained to me a strategy she herself had adopted in graduate school, when she too was overwhelmed with the readings she was being assigned. The idea is to sit down with your reading and a notebook and to jot down a note when something stands out. It can be a question about something you don't understand, a quote that resonated with you, a fact that shocked you or anything for that matter. But the concept is that you
read until you have five takeaways, five pieces of the reading you could speak on in class or mention in a paper, and then you close the book. Whether you read til five on the last page of the reading or first page of the reading, jot down your takeaways and close the book. It's that simple. Seriously.
As a life long overachiever, I adjusted the rule. I read til six. And all of a sudden I wasn't overwhelmed. My read til six philosophy carried me through that history course and the next five semesters, but it has carried me well beyond. I've found that, if I have six things to comment on, ask about or laugh about for any given topic, I'm conversational.
And that's what it's about right? As professionals there are about a million things we'd like to be conversational in, but only a few topics that demand our expertise. Til Six is a little corner of cyberspace dedicated to the takeaways. We read til six, write til six, ask til six and laugh til six and share the takeaways with you.
